The Telecommunications Industry Association and the Electronic Industries Association together developed the Category 6 Ethernet cable standard. The sixth generation of twisted pair Ethernet cable, or Cat 6, is utilized in both residential and commercial networks. The predecessor standards, Cat 5 and Cat 5e, are backward compatible with Cat 6 cabling.
